Elephant Hawk Moth

My favourite moth with its very striking pink and olive green colours. Flies usually May till early August. Foodplant is often Rosebay Willowherb.

White Spotted Pinion

The rarest moth recorded at the Golf Club. Feeds on elm (declined rapidly due to Dutch Elm disease) so its habitat is restricted to parts of Southern England. It seems to be doing well along the bridlepath on the Carthagena course. 8 were seen in one night on 1st August 2020

Privet Hawk Moth

The Uk's largest resident Hawk Moth measuring 9-12cm across. It flies June-July. Recorded at least once a year at the Golf Club.

Scarlet Tiger Moth

A striking colourful tropical looking moth. Recorded just a few times at John o' Gaunt on 2 consecutive days in June 2020 and seen again in 2021

Poplar Hawk Moth

Probably the most common Hawk moth in the UK.

Pine Hawk Moth

Seen from May to early August feeding on Honeeysuckle. The larvae are found feeding on pine needles or sometimes Cedar of Lebanon and Norway Spruce. Wingspan of 6.5 - 8cm.

Oak Eggar

Recorded for the first time on the Carthagena course in Aug 2020.

Jersey Tiger

A moth that is spreading from the south. the first record at the golf club was Aug 2017 then nothing until several records in August 2021

Lime Hawk Moth

A rather unique looking
moth with its colour and patterns on the wings. Usually seen between May and early July. The larvae associated with Lime trees, Alder and Silver Birch.

Black Spotted Chestnut

A scarce moth in Bedfordshire seen from Oct - April The first record in the Uk was in 2011 and is spreading. Just the one record at John o' Gaunt from November 2020.

BIRDS WING

A rather nicely marked moth. It flies late May to July and again in Aug/Sept in southern England.
